01The brief

An independent consultant competes with firms that have branded portals, account managers and a billing department. ConsultBase gives one person the same front: a branded client portal, proposals, documents, invoices and bookings in one place.

This one is mine: I designed it, built it and run it. It was built in collaboration with, and first tested by, a working GSA MAS advisor, a former federal contract specialist.

02What I built

A firm’s front door, for one person

Each consultant gets a portal in their own brand. Clients sign in with a link sent by email, with no password to remember, and find their engagements, documents, invoices and messages in one place.

“One platform. Every tool you actually need.” above cards for the branded portal, proposals and the AI associate.
Everything a client needs, behind one sign-in.

An associate, not a chatbot

Ivy, the built-in AI associate, can act across the practice. Every change it would make, from sending an invoice to booking a meeting, is shown as a preview first, and nothing happens until the consultant confirms.

Ivy answering “What’s on my plate today?”, with notes: “Never a destructive surprise” and “Knows what page you’re on”.
Every write runs a preview first.

Billing that keeps up

Milestones can raise invoices on their own, overdue invoices can carry late fees, and recurring plans charge a saved card on schedule.

“Look like a firm. Run like you.” on a phone.
The consultant’s dashboard on a phone: engagements, invoices and revenue.
“Most consulting tools have a chatbot. ConsultBase has an AI associate.” on a phone.

On a phone, 390 pixels wide.

03Under the hood

Next.js · Supabase with row-level security · Stripe · pg_cron · Vercel

Tenants kept apart by the database
Row-level security on all sixty tables makes the boundary between practices a database guarantee, not a filter someone has to remember to write.
Scheduled work inside Postgres
Scheduled jobs run on pg_cron inside the database, not on an outside scheduler that can quietly stop.
Plans enforced where the data is
What each plan includes is checked at the query layer, so the interface can’t show a feature the plan doesn’t have.
Open to other assistants
The same tools are available to Claude and other AI assistants through a remote MCP server, with the same preview before every change.
